A relaxed outing starts before you leave the house. Whether you are heading to a park or taking a short drive, a small bag of essentials helps you handle water breaks, muddy paws, and everyday surprises.
1. Pack drinking water and a clean bowl
Carry fresh water and a bowl your dog can use comfortably. Offer regular water breaks, especially during activity and warm weather. Do not rely on finding a public tap or assume shared outdoor water is clean. Plan an outing that suits your dog’s age, fitness, and the conditions.
2. Check walking gear before you leave
Inspect the leash, collar, or harness for wear and check the fit according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Make sure identification details are current. Choose a route where dogs are allowed and follow local leash rules. New equipment is best checked at home before a longer trip.
3. Bring waste bags and a spare roll
Keep a bag dispenser within reach and check how many bags remain. A spare roll takes little space and avoids surprises. Pick up after your dog and use a suitable waste bin. Follow the disposal instructions on the packaging; do not assume a bag is compostable or flushable.
4. Add a towel for the journey home
A dedicated pet towel is useful for wet paws and damp coats. Gently blot rather than rub sensitive areas, and check for grit before drying. Bring a separate bag for the used towel so the rest of your supplies stay dry. Wash and dry it according to its care label after the outing.
5. Prepare the car and schedule breaks
Use an appropriate, correctly fitted vehicle restraint or secured carrier. A leash attached to a collar is not a substitute for a suitable car restraint. Keep cleaning tools stowed while driving and only tidy the car when it is parked safely. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car.
For longer drives, plan safe stops and carry any regular medication or food your dog needs. Keep treats in a closed container and avoid leaving loose items where your dog could swallow them.
